Positioning a Nest Box
Positioning a nest box for Blue Tits
- The Box should be securely fixed 2-4 metres high on a tree, wall or post.
- The nest box should be positioned so that the entrance is sheltered from prevailing wind, rain and strong sunlight.
- If possible tilt the box forward slightly so that any driving rain will hit the roof and bounce clear.
- Make sure that the birds have a clear flight path to the nest without any clutter directly in front of the entrance.
Positioning a nest box for Robins, Pied Wagtails & Wrens
- Open-fronted nest boxes for Robins, Pied Wagtails and Wrens need to be low down, no more than 2m from ground level.
- The nest box needs to be well hidden in vegetation such as ivy, bush or hedge and to provide a fully concealed entrance.
